Geshel leaving Portage Lake District Library

Dillon Geshel says that if you had asked him a couple months ago, he would have told you he planned to be at the Portage Lake District Library forever. Instead, the one-time page and fixture of the organization is helping to plan a transition of leadership, as he prepares to embark on a new opportunity of his own.

Geshel says he has accepted a job at Superiorland Library Cooperative in Marquette. He explains its role and the benefits it provides to libraries across the UP, including Portage Lake.

Library cooperatives throughout this state are intended to help their member libraries, so for us in the UP there are 35 public libraries that belong to the cooperative, and we are there to help them with resource sharing, training, library development, advocacy issues, things like that.

Geshel says the cooperative is particularly important in helping with technological changes.

For rural libraries like we have throughout the UP, one of the biggest issues for them is trying to manage there technology, because they don’t have big budgets that can afford their own IT staff, so we help them with that as well.

Geshel has about a month left at Portage Lake District Library. He says there is still time to check out the Rad Academy lessons being offered at the Houghton Skate Park. Geshel is one of the lead instructors for that program.
