Long-term care facilities wary of new CMS mandate

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is threatening to pull federal funding from long-term care facilities if all employees are not fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Canal View – Houghton County is a fairly representative organization for the area at large, and Administrator Kim Salmi says their rate is around 65 percent.

Salmi says industry studies suggest even coercion would not be enough to get everyone on board, and that would have a significant impact on operational capabilities.

Long-term care entities who have mandated it, and these are some larger multi-nursing home operations, so they have homes throughout the nation. They had about 15 percent not take it. I don’t know any nursing home right now that can give up 15 percent of their staff.

Salmi says other groups who deal with the medically vulnerable are not being required to take the same steps, and that has the appearance at least of being unfair.

A lot of these that are unvaccinated, they have their reasons for it. Some of them are health concerns, some are obviously religious concerns, but they are dedicated to what they do every day. We send residents out to the hospital, we send residents to dialysis. You talk about high-risk population, that’s about as high as it can be. We allow hospice staff to come into the facility, but they don’t have to be vaccinated? Same with EMS.

In a recent Copper Country Today, Salmi shared that Canal View – Houghton County was 100 percent staffed prior to COVID-19, but that there are openings now in several departments. That is the norm for long-term care facilities nationwide.
