Michigan Tech alumni close on Mount Horace Greeley land sale

A nearly two-year process to sell a prominent Keweenaw County peak has come to an end. Prosecuting Attorney Charles Miller says the sale of the former Calumet Air Force Station closed for $237,365. A group of Michigan Tech alumni placed the winning bid, led by Zach Garner of Perry, Michigan.

Mount Horace Greeley overlooks Gratiot Lake, rising over 900 feet above the rest of the peninsula. The investors intend to remediate environmental issues at the site and turn it into a tourism destination.

In the cover letter attached to their bid, the group lists its cumulative experience in environmental engineering, industrial systems designs, construction trades, computer and electrical engineering, and vehicle repair. Garner says it has been a dream to rehabilitate the property for years.
