Houghton firms up Community Night Out plans

The City of Houghton is bringing back “Art on the Town” for the Community Night Out September 4th. Manager Eric Waara likens it to a farmer’s market without the produce.

As long as you made it. It’s a “hand-made thing,” so you could probably see anything from woodworking projects to art projects, paintings and things like that.

It will be held on the parking deck near Subway restaurant and the Copper Poppy. Waara says there have already been some new signups, but you can expect many of the same vendors who took part in the Winter Market held in November and December. He jokes that the weather will probably be a touch nicer for this event.

Houghton has approved spending $4,000 for the fireworks display that ends the fun, lighting off at about 9:00 PM. The City of Hancock, Keweenaw Chamber, and local businesses like Campioni Hardware and Pat’s Foods, Northern Specialty Health, and Nitro Consulting are also sponsoring.

Keweenaw Chamber Manager Tara Arens says, “Our goal is to make this a relaxed, family-friendly event. We encourage individuals and families to come out and enjoy the day, visit your local eateries, breweries and shop at our local businesses. As the evening wraps up, grab a spot near the beautiful Portage Canal and watch the fireworks.”
