Miguel Blasts #499 in Tigers’ Win – Thursday Sports Wrap

MLB

Miguel Cabrera hit his 499th career home run, as the Detroit Tigers downed the Baltimore Orioles 5-2 last night. Cabrera had three hits, and also plated a run with a sacrifice fly. Tarik Skubal tossed six shutout innings, scattering five hits to earn the win. Detroit could have scored more, but left the bases loaded in two innings.

The Tigers conclude that series in Baltimore this afternoon. Matt Manning will start against John Means. Coverage will begin at 3:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit has placed outfielders Derek Hill and Akil Baddoo on the injured list. The two collided while chasing a fly ball in Tuesday night’s game. Both left the field under their own power, but Baddoo suffered a concussion, and Hill has bruised ribs and a sore knee. To replace them, the Tigers brought up infielders Zack Short and Renato Núñez from Toledo.

Niko Goodrum is also headed back to the injured list. He suffered a groin injury while running out a double in last night’s contest, and had to leave the game. The Tigers will call up outfielder Jacob Robson from Toledo to fill in, but will need to open a spot on the 40-man roster to do so.

The Milwaukee Brewers exploded for seven runs in the top of the first inning, and cruised past the Chicago Cubs 10-0 last night. Corbin Burnes dominated the Chicago lineup, striking out 15 batters over eight innings, including 10 in a row to tie a major league record. Omar Narváez had three hits, including a home run, and drove in four runs.

The Brewers wrap up that set in Chicago this afternoon. Brandon Woodruff will pitch against Kyle Hendricks.

One of the relievers Milwaukee acquired just before last month’s trade deadline may miss the rest of the season. John Curtiss left the second game of Tuesday’s doubleheader with a sore elbow. He’s been diagnosed with a torn ligament. Reliever Ángel Perdomo has also landed on the injured list with a lower back strain. Josh Hader is due back from a COVID-19 timeout today, and Justin Topa has been brought off the injured list. Topa hasn’t pitched all season, because of an elbow injury. The Brewers also recalled pitcher Hoby Milner from Nashville, and sent pitcher Aaron Ashby back down.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons have re-signed three role players from last year’s team. Guards Rodney McGruder, Frank Jackson and Cory Joseph will stay with the club.

College Baseball

The Finlandia University baseball team has added a new recruit. Matt Smith is a pitcher and first baseman from Reno, Nevada.
