Inaugural Verna Mize Triathlon a success

A host of volunteers and twelve business sponsors helped to make the first ever Verna Mize Triathlon a memorable one for the racers. Organizer Mary Kaminski says 26 people took part, including 10 kids doing the “Mini Mize.”

The event was timed to coincide with Michigan Tech’s Alumni Reunion, and that netted a couple of extra racers.

One alumni’s daughter did the race, a 14-year old. The other person is a Tech alumnus and he had seen it on the Michigan Tech website.

The only potential snag wasn’t really a snag at all. Construction on Canal Road was not quite completed, with the final leg of the bike route out to Schmidt’s Corner having to take place on packed gravel, rather than pavement. There was some concern that a tire or two may pop due to the rougher surface, but road conditions on race day proved to be ideal.

Law enforcement and the United States Coast Guard were on hand as well. Saturday’s event sets a good foundation for what could become a tradition in the Copper Country.
