Houghton County August 3rd election results

All millages on the ballot, both county-wide and at the municipal level, are renewed by overwhelming margins. As might be expected, turnout was generally low, between 13 and 17 percent depending on the measure.

Kim Salmi and Adam Laplander of Canal View – Houghton County were on Copper Country Today this weekend explaining what the millage funds would be used towards. In addition to emergency purchases, beds are being updated facility wide.

And the standard nursing home bed, and hospital bed even, are smaller than your standard twin sized bed. They’re now going to have more appropriately sized beds.

Salmi says the extra space should help lessen the chance that residents fall out of their beds. The final tally was 2,835 (79.8%) in favor versus 718 (20.2%) against.

Hancock asked voters to renew a millage for recreation projects. It passed 361 (78.8%) to 97 (21.2%). Hubbell had a millage renewal to benefit the fire department. It was approved 65 (67%) to 32 (33%).

Calumet and Laurium asked voters to renew public works equipment funding. The first passed 60 (67%) to 30 (33%). The latter was 187 for and 32 against, a 85.4%-14.6% margin.
