LaPointe-Dunham takes over at KBIC

Brigitte LaPointe-Dunham begins her tenure today as Chief Executive Officer of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community. She is a tribal member and her family has extensive experience in management roles within the group, says LaPointe-Dunham.

My grandfather was an integral piece to what our tribe is today. He served as CEO in the 80’s for some time. My grandmother was another leader that a lot of people looked up to. She served on council and was the first ever chairwoman to lead a council.

The CEO is responsible for managing the different departments in tribal government; administrative services, public works, emergency services like police, and historic preservation efforts.

LaPointe-Dunham expects to hit the ground running.

First things first will really be taking time to meet with the staff and understand their needs and wants as an organization, and what they want to see in me as a leader. I will also look at processes and procedures that are currently in place, and see what we can do to enhance those.

LaPointe-Dunham holds two master’s degrees, one from Northern Michigan University and the other from Michigan State. The second is in management and she says her prior job as director of strategic initiatives at Upper Peninsula Health Plan has helped her to understand the importance of creating a great work culture.
