Working Remote in the Copper Country

There are some that have put down roots recently in the Keweenaw Peninsula. A number of these new residents are continuing to work remotely, even as life begins to return to normal. The economic development group, Remote Workforce Keweenaw, has been working since 2018 to track this interesting sector of the economy.
Keith Meyers, Remote Workforce Keweenaw; We’re find that a lot of these positions cross a lot of industries. There are a lot of people that work in the information technology field, and we’re seeing that it’s really all over the map. Which is really a cool feature about it, because its something that your really beholden to one industry if the economy turns. One of things that we’re finding is that most of these workers have had some sort of connection to the Keweenaw. and really had an affinity for the lifestyle that is available up here.
These new workers affect the economy here and in other parts of the Upper Peninsula. These positions can be well paid and offer employees more flexibility. Jeff Ratcliffe of the Keweenaw Economic Development Alliance knows how these new workers can impact the economy of the copper country.
Jeff Ratcliffe, Keweenaw Economic Development Alliance; If there are folks moving into our area to work at jobs, that the headquarters elsewhere. They are bringing their paychecks to the area. So like any employee, it’s that additional wage income that is put back into our local economy. We have very good opportunities here in the Keweenaw Peninsula for sustained, growth and a vibrant economy.
Remote work is still a newer trend within the United States’ economy. One that both employers and workers are capitalizing on. The Keweenaw Peninsula is attempting to as well.
