Principal Steve Aho says that Copper Island Academy enrollment is capped at 346 students for the fall and it is within 16 children of hitting that goal. While sign-ups have been generally even from kindergarten through eighth grade, being so close to the maximum means waiting lists are in place for some levels.
The school’s construction remains on track to open in time for the first day of the academic calendar, tentatively set as Tuesday, September 7th. The school had to recently purchase a strip of land in addition to the two parcels already bought near Houghton County Memorial Airport. Aho explains why that was necessary.
Aho says there are no plans to develop a high school in the next several years and rumors to the contrary remain just that. Aho expects Copper Island Academy to keep most of its extracurricular activities in-house, but has explored the possibility of entering into a co-op arrangement for certain middle school athletics. All discussions were very preliminary in nature.
Aho says hiring is going well.
He says staff for the higher grades will be brought on in the coming months.
