Juhannus celebration Thursday

A familiar sight is set to rise above Hancock’s Quincy Green on Thursday. Volunteers will adorn the Midsummer pole with boughs before hoisting it into place for a community Juhannus celebration at 3:00 PM.

Finnish American Center Interim Director David Maki says you can expect it to be around for a while.

Mother Nature typically decides when it’s time for it to come down, when the greens aren’t quite so green anymore and it doesn’t look quite as festive in late July or very early August.

Other Juhannus staples like the bonfire have been culled from this year’s schedule but they’ll return in due time. Maki says the goal is to be as safe as possible, not just for the festival but for the center itself.

He says the organization is working hard to bring back popular events. The folk school and Nordic film series do not have any dates set yet. Maki expects that once Finlandia students return for the fall semester, things will be in full swing.
