Fatal Accidental Shooting in Republic

The woman involved in an apparent accidental shooting in Republic Township Friday afternoon has died. Troopers from the Negaunee post of the Michigan State Police say they responded to the home of 67-year-old Athena Engle after the shooting was reported shortly before 4:00 p.m. Engle had suffered a single gunshot wound in her left leg from a .38 caliber handgun. She had called 911 and reported that she accidentally shot herself in the leg. Engle was home alone at the time of the incident. Engle was transported to UP Health System Marquette by UP Health System Bell EMS. She died there Saturday. Troopers say they did not find any signs of foul play as a result of their investigation.
