Fire danger remains elevated

Red flag warnings have come down as humidity levels rise, but the area is not out of the woods yet. Hot, dry, and windy conditions prompted officials to issue fire weather advisories over the weekend, with only some of those factors alleviating themselves since. Temperatures are expected to return close to normal beginning on Friday, but rainfall will be spotty.

Meteorologist Matthew Zika of the National Weather Service in Marquette says that until precipitation comes at a steadier clip, people will need to remain vigilant.

We’re going to continue building on the dry pattern for many. So, any time we get back into a pattern like we saw over the weekend, where it is hot, warm, and windy those fire concerns are going to be there.

Thunderstorms have been more common through southern Houghton and Baraga Counties in recent weeks, even as the rest of the Keweenaw stays dry.
