The Superior Alliance for Independent Living, Disability Network of the Upper Peninsula (SAIL) teams up with the State of Michigan and the Department of Natural Resources to offer summer jobs in the Copper Country for the disabled. In order to carry out this important program, supervisors are needed for the eight weeks from June 14th to August 6th.
Work sites include various school systems and municipalities in Houghton, Baraga, and Keweenaw Counties, as well as at Baraga State Park. Tadych’s Econofoods is also offering opportunities. Manager Leslie Kovar says the program empowers children by showing them they are capable of completing meaningful jobs. It can also help with social development.
The Summer Job Coach position is part-time Monday through Thursday except at Baraga State Park and pays $16 per hour. Kovar says in past years teachers have used the program as an opportunity to earn some extra money during the summer, but she has heard from past participants that they are feeling stressed after the last year of pandemic instruction, so there are opportunities for others to get involved for the first time.
