Potential new jail site staying with Portage Township utilities

A purchase agreement is in the hands of the owners of the First Apostolic Lutheran Church on Sharon Avenue for their review. Houghton County is in the process of buying the site to potentially move the Sheriff’s Department and jail operations there.

It is required that the county seat, the City of Houghton, be the home of the county government. With the church parcel currently a part of Portage Township, talks are underway between Commissioner Roy Britz, legal staff, and the managers of Houghton and Portage Township to allow the city to annex the site. Britz says the conversation is progressing nicely upon one condition.

Water and sewer supply comes from Portage Township. If it is capable of handling it, [Houghton Manager Eric] Waara indicated that the city has no problem leaving it with the township, so they can still get the revenue from it.

Preliminary plans have the church being modified to house the Sheriff’s Department, while a new jail is constructed. That could become a justice center, which would contain the district court as well.
