In softball yesterday…
• Hancock swept Ishpeming, 12-7 and 9-8. Kaydence Kilpela was the winning pitcher in both contests. She had two doubles in the opening game, and three hits in the nightcap. Kaisa Salani had three hits in the opener, and Krista Kela had two in the second game.
• Calumet took two from Houghton, 11-5 and 8-5.
In softball this afternoon…
• Hancock visits Calumet, for a doubleheader that was postponed from Monday. Our coverage will begin at 3:40 on KBear 102 and KBear102.com.
In high school baseball yesterday…
• Calumet won both of its games against L’Anse, 13-0 and 12-3.
• Jeffers swept Lake Linden-Hubbell 25-1 and 14-3. The mercy rule ended game one after three innings – Dean Jurmu struck out eight Lakes batters. The second game was called after five innings.
In baseball today…
• Houghton entertains Ontonagon.
In baseball tomorrow…
• Houghton and Calumet will compete at a tournament at Negaunee. The Gremlins will face the Miners at 10:00. The Copper Kings will take on Superior Central at noon. The consolation game will start at 2:00, with the championship game at 4:00.
In golf yesterday, no results were received from the Hancock Invitational.
In track today…
• Houghton County schools will compete at the Houghton County Invitational at Calumet.
• L’Anse will take part in a meet at Negaunee.
College Baseball
The Finlandia University baseball team wraps up its season with doubleheaders today and tomorrow at Wisconsin-Stout.
College Football
The Finlandia University football team has added a new recruit. Jaheim Hooks is a wide receiver from Angie, Louisiana.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons host the Denver Nuggets tonight.
NFL
The Green Bay Packers have signed free agent quarterback Blake Bortles. Bortles is entering his eighth season. He spent five years with the Jacksonville Jaguars, and remains their number-two all-time in career passing yards, pass attempts, pass completions and passing touchdowns.
MLB
The Detroit Tigers scored four times in the second inning, and held off the Kansas City Royals 4-3 yesterday. The Tigers used four singles, a double and a sacrifice fly to build the early lead. Spencer Turnbull pitched into the seventh inning, and gave up one run on six hits. He struck out seven. K-C made it close with two runs off Gregory Soto in the top of the ninth, but Michael Fulmer relieved him, and got a pop out and a strikeout to earn the save.
The Tigers have won four in a row, and open a home set against the Chicago Cubs tonight. Tarik Skubal will face Jake Arrieta. Coverage begins at 6:50 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Milwaukee Brewers lost 2-0 to the Saint Louis Cardinals yesterday. Corbin Burnes struck out nine batters over five innings, and gave up just one run, but took the loss.
The Brewers visit the Washington Nationals tonight. Adrian Houser will pitch against Drew Smyly.
Burnes wasn’t the only Milwaukee player to return from the injured list for yesterday’s game. Catcher Omar Narváez and pitcher Josh Lindblom were reinstated. Catcher Luke Maile and reliever Patrick Weigel were sent down to Nashville, and catcher Jacob Nottingham was designated for assignment. Outfielder Christian Yelich and infielder infielder Daniel Robertson are also headed to Nashville for rehab assignments, in hopes they can rejoin the Brewers next week.
