Houghton County Fair gets good news

The Houghton County Fair has the go-ahead to hold an event this August. Set in its customary end of the month slot, the fair will be able to have its full complement of livestock auctions and the midway is returning as well.

Office Manager Carol Saari says two main questions remain. The first is how much of the grandstand events will be allowed.

What we are not sure of is the outdoor entertainment, how many people we could fit into our main events arena.

The second issue is a definitional one. The state is permitting 20 people per 1,000 square feet. The Fair Board is asking for clarification if that means only usable event space or if it can include all of the Hancock Driving Park, says Saari.

There is some concern about staffing levels for the carnival. The operator is warning the fair that they may only be able to get half as many employees as normal from the United States. Skerbeck, who operates the midway, says they were lucky in the H-2 B lottery and will be able to bring in some foreign help.
