In high school baseball yesterday…
• Jeffers split its doubleheader against the Gogebic Miners, with a 6-2 loss and a 9-0 victory.
On the softball schedule today…
• Hancock hosts Ironwood.
• Calumet travels to Northland Pines.
In track and field…
• Houghton and Calumet will compete at the Ontonagon Invitational.
• Hancock, Lake Linden-Hubbell, Chassell, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City and Jeffers will compete at the Lake Linden-Hubbell Invitational.
The Michigan High School Athletic Association has made some changes. Practices for all fall sports will now start on the same day – the 16th Monday before Thanksgiving. This year, that will be August 9th. At its recent spring meeting, the MHSAA Representative Council also approved girls wrestling as a tournament sport.
College Softball
The Finlandia University softball team fell 8-0 to Southern Virginia in their opening game at the Coast to Coast Athletic Conference tournament yesterday. Harlie Caster had two of the Lions’ three hits, and tied the school career record. Finlandia will face the University of Mary Washington in an elimination game this afternoon.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons defeated the Memphis Grizzlies 111-97 last night. Cory Joseph and Wayne Ellington both returned to the lineup after missing four games because of injuries. Each scored 18 points. Detroit played without Killian Hayes, who was ill, Josh Jackson, who was recovering from oral surgery, and Hamidou Diallo, who missed the game because of personal reasons.
The Pistons visit the Philadelphia 76ers tomorrow night.
NHL
Detroit Red Wings end their season with games at Columbus tonight and tomorrow night.
MLB
The Boston Red Sox scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, and beat the Detroit Tigers 12-9 yesterday. The teams combined for 30 hits and six errors, but no home runs. Detroit starter Spencer Turnbull gave up four runs on seven hits over three innings, but it was reliever Alex Lange who was tagged with both the loss and a blown save.
The Tigers host the Minnesota Twins tonight. Tarik Skubal will face Matt Shoemaker. Coverage begins at 6:50 on 99.3 The Lift.
Detroit has placed pitcher Derek Holland on the injured list because of a left shoulder strain. Kyle Funkhouser was activated off the taxi squad to fill in.
The Milwaukee Brewers collected just three hits, and lost 2-0 to the Philadelphia Phillies yesterday. Brandon Woodruff took the tough loss for Milwaukee, pitching into the seventh inning, and giving up just one run on two hits. He struck out 11.
The Brewers visit the Miami Marlins tonight. Brent Suter will open what promises to be a bullpen night for Milwaukee. Trevor Rogers will start for Miami.
Former Brewers manager Del Crandall has died. Crandall was a catcher on the powerful Milwaukee Braves teams in the 1950s, and was the last surviving Milwaukee Braves alumnus. He led the Brewers from 1972 to 1975, and also managed the Seattle Mariners. Del Crandall was 91, and had been battling Parkinson’s disease.
NFL
The Detroit Lions have signed Frank Ragnow to a four-year contract extension. At $13.5 million per season, he becomes the highest-paid center in the NFL.
