High School

In high school baseball yesterday…
• Houghton split its doubleheader at Iron Mountain, losing the opener 13-12, but claiming the nightcap 5-3.

In baseball today…
• Lake Linden-Hubbell plays at Ontonagon.

In softball yesterday…
• Calumet blanked Gwinn 18-0 in the first game of their doubleheader. The Modeltowners forfeited the second contest.

On the softball schedule this afternoon…
• Houghton visits the Gogebic Miners.

In track and field yesterday…
• At the Negaunee Invitational, the Houghton girls finished third. Lily Williston won the discus throw and the shot put for the Gremlins. The Houghton boys team came in fourth. Full results were not provided.
• At the Early Bird Invitational at Lake Linden…
– Lake Linden-Hubbell edged out Dollar Bay by three points to take the boys team title. Calumet finished third. The Lakes claimed the 4×100 and 4×200 relays. The Blue Bolts took the 4×400 and the 4×800. Kolson Kytta of Chassell won the 800-meter and 1600-meter runs. See full results here.
– West Iron County easily claimed the girls team crown, with Lake Linden-Hubbell second, and Calumet third. The Copper Kings excelled in the relays, taking the 4×100, the 4×400 and the 4×800. Chassell’s Gwen Kangas won the 1600-meter and 3200-meter runs. See full results here.

In high school golf today…
• Local teams compete at the Houghton Invitational on the Portage Lake course.

College Soccer

Both Finlandia University soccer teams have added new recruits. Mikayla Brown will join the women’s squad. She’s a goalkeeper from Richfield, Minnesota. Bertin Manzi will join the men’s team. He was a four-year team captain at Phoenix College Preparatory Academy in Phoenix.

MTU

Sarah Dowd has been named Senior Woman Administrator for the Michigan Tech athletic program. Dowd adds that responsibility to her current duties as Director of Student-Athlete Wellness and Clinical Counselor.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons dropped a 102-99 heartbreaker to the Charlotte Hornets last night. Hamidou Diallo scored a career-best 35 points for Detroit. Killian Hayes’ three-pointer at the buzzer that would have forced overtime was off the mark.

The Pistons welcome the Memphis Grizzlies tomorrow night. Coverage will begin at 7:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers finally found their bats last night, but still lost to the Boston Red Sox 11-7. The Sox struck early, scoring eight runs over the first three innings off Michael Fulmer, Alex Lange and Daniel Norris. Bryan Garcia was the only one of seven Tigers pitchers who was not charged with a run. JaCoby Jones homered for Detroit.

The Tigers have lost 16 of their last 18 games, and play in Boston again tonight. Casey Mize will start against Martín Pérez. Coverage will begin at 6:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers lost to the Philadelphia Phillies 6-5 last evening. The Phillies took command with a five-run third inning. Milwaukee starter Eric Lauer gave up all six runs over six frames, and took the loss. The Brewers made it close with a four-run seventh inning, powered by a home run by Jackie Bradley, Jr.

The Brewers play at Philadelphia again tonight. Freddy Peralta will start against former Brewer Chase Anderson.

Christian Yelich’s return from the injury list lasted only one day. Lower back problems have sidelined him again. Tyrone Taylor has been called back up.

The injury-riddled Brewers have signed up some help. Pitcher Wade LeBlanc, infielder Logan Forsythe and catcher Christian Kelley were signed to minor league deals yesterday. All were assigned to Nashville. LeBlanc and Forsythe both have substantial major league experience. Kelley reached Triple-A in the Pirates’ system.

NFL

The Detroit Lions are suddenly in the market for a tight end. Josh Hill, who signed a free agent deal with Detroit two months ago after eight seasons with New Orleans, is now expected to retire. The Lions are reportedly talking with veteran Darren Fells, who played for Detroit in the 2017 season.
