Softball Sweeps for ‘Dogs, Lakes – Tuesday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school baseball yesterday…
• Jeffers took two from Calumet, 14-12 and 10-9.
• The L’Anse game at Lake Linden-Hubbell was canceled.

In baseball today…
• Houghton travels to Iron Mountain.

In softball yesterday…
• Houghton and Calumet split their DH, the Copper Kings won the first game 10-3, while Houghton put up 10 in the third only to go into extra innings to win 13-12 in nine.
• Hancock shut down Gwinn 25-1 and 17-2. Kaydence Kilpela was the winning pitcher in the first game, and Emilie Scholie got the win in the nightcap.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell routed the Gogebic Miners 18-2 and 17-2. Olivia Shank got the win in both games, striking out four in the opener, and eight in the nightcap. Clara Colombe had three doubles in the first contest, and Becca Lyons also had three hits. Kara Kinnunen had a pair of doubles in the second game for the Lakes.
• The L’Anse-Ishpeming game was canceled.

All of L’Anse’s varsity athletic contests have been canceled this week, as the district has gone to remote learning for grades 10-12.

In softball today…
• Calumet plays at Gwinn.
• L’Anse v the Gogebic Miners – canceled.

In track and field today…
• Houghton competes at the Negaunee Invitational
• Other local teams will take part in the Early Bird Invitational at Lake Linden-Hubbell.

College Softball

The Finlandia University softball team is seeded fifth in this weekend’s Coast to Coast Athletic Conference tournament. The Lions will open against fourth seed Southern Virginia when the double-elimination tourney begins on Thursday. Since Coast to Coast Conference teams to not meet during the regular season, seedings are based on record and strength-of-schedule ratings. The tournament will be hosted by Mount Mary University at a facility in Waukesha, Wisconsin.

NBA

A late surge fell short, as the Detroit Pistons lost to the Orlando Magic 119-112 last night. Saddiq Bey led Detroit with 26 points and nine rebounds.

The Pistons welcome the Charlotte Hornets tonight.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers had yesterday off, and begin a series at Boston tonight. Michael Fulmer will start in place of the injured Matthew Boyd for Detroit. Nick Pivetta will counter for the Red Sox.

The Milwaukee Brewers lost to the Philadelphia Phillies 4-3 last evening. The Phillies scored twice in the first and twice in the second off Adrian Houser, who settled in and completed six innings. Lorenzo Cain hit a solo home run in the first inning for Milwaukee. The Crew scored two in the eighth to make it close, but couldn’t complete the comeback.

The Brewers play at Philadelphia again tonight. Eric Lauer will start against Aaron Nola.

Cain and Christian Yelich returned from the injured list for last night’s game. Tyrone Taylor and Keston Hiura were sent down to Nashville to make room.
