Ironwood Suicide Attempts Leads to Evacuation

An Ironwood neighborhood was evacuated Saturday after a man drank antifreeze and tried to burn his home down. Ironwood Public Safety says the suicidal man had a fight with his live-in girlfriend, drank antifreeze, dumped gasoline throughout his home, and then barricaded himself inside an upstairs bedroom. A SWAT team was called in and eventually went into the barricaded room and took the 30-year-old man out of the home. The man was listed in critical condition at a local hospital. The girlfriend and an infant were found safe at another home. Nearby residents were evacuated to a restaurant because of the possibility of a fire. The whole ordeal lasted about three hours. Numerous police and fire agencies responded to the incident.
