Calumet Softball Wins Grayling Tourney – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school softball Saturday…
• Calumet won the Grayling Invitational, defeating Constantine 12-4 in the opening contest, and pounding the host Vikings 25-9 in the championship game. Elli Djerf was the winning pitcher in the opener, and Taylor Vertin claimed the win in the nightcap.

In high school baseball Saturday…
• Calumet lost two at Gladstone, 8-1 and 17-2.

College Baseball

The Finlandia University baseball team dropped both games of Saturday’s doubleheader at Wisconsin-LaCrosse, 37-7 and 10-0. Seven Lions pitchers gave up 26 hits and 14 walks in the opener. Jacob Mead homered for Finlandia. The Lions got just three hits in the second contest.

The Lions fell to 0-28 on the season.

College Soccer

Northern Michigan University standout Caroline Halonen has been named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Player of the Year. Grace Shaw and Brooke Schauer from Michigan Tech were named to the all-conference second team, and Jesse Jacobusse received honorable mention votes.

NMU will face Grand Valley State in the GLIAC tournament title game this afternoon in Big Rapids.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings edged the Tampa Bay Lightning 1-0 in a shootout Saturday afternoon. After neither team could find the net during regulation and overtime, the squads matched goal for goal in the early portion of the shootout. Jakub Vrana, Filip Zadina and Valtteri Filppula scored for Detroit, and Sam Gagner’s goal in the eighth round finally ended it. Thomas Greiss made 33 saves, and earned his second straight shutout win.

The Wings host the Lightning again this afternoon. We’ll join the game in progress following Tigers baseball on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons couldn’t overcome a slow start, and fell to the Charlotte Hornets 107-94 Saturday night. Frank Jackson came off the bench to lead Detroit with 25 points. Saddiq Bey scored 22.

The Pistons visit the Orlando Magic tomorrow night. Coverage begins at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers’ tailspin continued with a 6-4 loss to the New York Yankees Saturday. Spencer Turnbull gave up two runs over the first five innings, then left in the sixth, as the Bronx Bombers scored four times off him and José Cisnero. Jeimer Candelario and Noki Goodrum homered.

The Tigers conclude that series in New York today. José Ureña will pitch against Corey Kluber. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers outlasted the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-5 in 11 innings Saturday. The game was tied 2-2 after nine innings. Each team scored a run in the 10th. The Dodgers added two in the top of the 11th off Drew Rasmussen and Angel Perdomo, but the Brewers loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the inning. A sacrifice fly by Kolton Wong plated one run, and RBI singles by Avisaíl García and Travis Shaw gave Milwaukee the win.

The Brewers host the Dodgers again this afternoon. Alec Bettinger will make his major league debut for the Crew. Julio Urías will counter for Los Angeles.

As expected, the Brewers have placed catcher Omar Narváez on the injured list. Prospect Mario Feliciano was called up to fill in. He made his debut as a pinch-hitter in the 11th inning of last night’s contest, drew a walk, and scored the winning run. Milwaukee also added pitcher Eric Yardley to the injured list, and brought up pitcher Patrick Weigel. The Brewers now have 16 players on the injured list.

NFL

The Detroit Lions added a new target for new quarterback Jared Goff on the final day of the NFL Draft Saturday. They used the 112th pick on USC receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown. Detroit then traded up to take Purdue linebacker Derrick Barnes with the 113th selection, and closed their draft by claiming Oregon State running back Jermar Jefferson with pick number 257. Some observers had expected Jefferson to go as high as the third round.

The Green Bay Packers had a lot of late-round picks. They chose Mississippi offensive tackle Royce Newman with the 142nd selection, Florida defensive tackle Tedarrell Slaton with the 173rd, Appalachian State cornerback Shemar Jean-Charles with the 178th, Wisconsin guard Cole Van Lanen with the 214th, Boston College linebacker Isaiah McDuffie with the 220th, and Mississippi State running back Kylin Hill with the 256th. Van Lanen played for Bay Port High School in the Green Bay area.
