The Michigan Department of Treasury is now processing Michigan Home Heating Credits for the 2014 tax year. The credit assists low-income customers with winter energy bills. The average credit in 2014 was $130. Instruction booklets and forms have been mailed out by the Department of Treasury. For those people who file a tax return, the agency encourages them to e-file their returns because it speeds processing and reduces errors for the credit. Almost 82 percent of the Home Heating Credits were e-filed in 2014. To find an authorized e-file provider and information on free e-file services, visit Treasury’s website. Individuals may apply for the Home Heating Credit even if they do not file a tax return.
