The Drug Enforcement Administration’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is this Saturday. There are usually two events per year, and they continue to get bigger with each iteration. Locally, there is a drop box available year-round at the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office, but law enforcement is happy to see the issue get national awareness.
The DEA’s website has a local guide as to who is taking part. Between 10 AM and 2 PM, you are encouraged to drop off pills at Michigan Tech Public Safety. They ask that only solids be handed over, not liquids. Public Safety is located at 206 MacInnes Drive, just south of US-41. The Michigan State Police-Calumet Post, and the Keweenaw Bay Tribal Police are other options in the Copper Country.
Materials dropped off come with no questions asked and can be expired or simply unused prescription drugs. In October 2020, the DEA collected nearly one million pounds of narcotics.
