Houghton not planning a social district

Several Michigan communities have embraced a new law allowing for social districts, but don’t expect one in the Copper Country for some time. Sanctioned by the state’s liquor commission, social districts allow for to-go purchases at participating bars and restaurants, including alcohol. The cup used has the logo of the establishment who sold the drink and identifies it as being permissible within the defined boundary.

Saugatuck has a narrow social district, encompassing only a few blocks. Royal Oak, a suburb north of Detroit, just passed a plan to allow for a social district across nearly its entire downtown. City Manager Eric Waara says Houghton’s topography and layout make it harder to pull off here.

The city has allowed for relaxed outdoor seating accommodations in the past year.
