The Enbridge oil pipeline running under the Straits of Mackinac has a new challenge as the Sierra Club filed a federal lawsuit to overturn the U.S. Forest Service permit that allows it to operate. The pipeline requires the permit because portions run through the Huron-Manistee National Forest. It spring a pinhole leak in December just north of Manistique near the Indian River but there was no contamination. The Sierra Club is requesting an environmental analysis of the line before the federal permit takes effect. Spokesman Marvin Roberson says it’s been more than 60 years since the pipeline was built, but in all those years, there’s never been an environmental risk study by any federal or state agency.
