MSP releases statement on Hubbell officer-involved shooting

Monday night, around 9:15, law enforcement personnel from the Michigan State Police – Calumet Post and Houghton County Sheriff’s Department responded to a disturbance at a Hubbell home. Officers interacted with a 28-year-old woman, who has a prior history of violent acts. They commanded her to put down a handgun, but their orders were ignored. When the woman went back towards the entrance of the house, officers opened fire, striking her multiple times. They were worried for the safety of an elderly person inside the home.

Shootings are reviewed by an Investigative Response Team from another region. For the Michigan State Police, District Eight consists of the entire Upper Peninsula. The investigation of the scene is being led by a group from several hours away. It is still ongoing and more details, including the woman’s identity, will be made public going forward. She has been taken to a local hospital, where she is recovering.

The troopers involved have been placed on administrative leave, consistent with protocol. Neighbors have posted various videos to Facebook of the incident. Lieutenant Mark Giannunzio says they help shed some light on the situation, but questions still remain. He was unable to say yet who placed the initial phone call to 9-1-1, whether it was a family member or someone living down the street from the initial disturbance.

The IRT Team, the Incident Response Team, is still investigating and I don’t have that information. They haven’t released that to me yet.

The full release is below.

At approximately 9:15 p.m. on Monday, April 12, troopers from the Michigan State Police (MSP) Calumet Post, along with a deputy from the Houghton County Sheriff’s Department, were dispatched to a report of shots fired at a residence in Hubbell. Upon arriving, officers encountered a 28-year-old female subject who was outside the residence, armed with a gun. The officers gave repeated verbal commands to the subject to relinquish the firearm, but she refused and instead attempted to re-enter the occupied home with the firearm.

Fearing for the safety of an elderly person inside the residence, the officers fired their weapons, striking the female. After the shooting, the officers administered first aid until EMS arrived. She was transported to a local hospital where she remains.

Detectives from the MSP Seventh District Investigative Response Team are conducting a full investigation into the shooting. The troopers who were involved have been placed on administrative leave, per department protocol, while the investigation is underway.

When complete, the investigation will be forwarded to the Houghton County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
