Calumet Girls Advance to Hoops Semis – Tuesday Sports Wrap

High School

The Calumet girls basketball team advanced to the Division Three state semifinals with a fast-paced 73-69 victory over Glen Lake last night. In a seesaw battle, the Copper Kings started slowly. They gained the lead midway through the second period, then went cold, and trailed by as many as 12 points in the third quarter, before a late surge brought them the win over the previously unbeaten Lakers. Elli Djerf led Calumet with 23 points. Alexis Strom added 16, and Marybeth Halonen 15. See video highlights here.

The Copper Kings improve to 20-0, and will face Kent City in the semifinals tomorrow. The unbeaten Eagles eliminated Schoolcraft 52-19 last night. Tip-off at the Breslin Center in East Lansing will be tomorrow afternoon at 12:30. Our coverage will start at 12:10 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com. Grass Lake and Hemlock will meet in the other semifinal tomorrow morning.

In Division Four, Carney-Nadeau defeated Rudyard 62-52 last night, and will play Fowler in the state semifinals tomorrow morning. In Division Two, Escanaba’s tournament run ended with a 47-41 loss to Portland.

Boys quarterfinals will be played tonight. In Division Four, Carney-Nadeau faces Rudyard. In Division Three, Iron Mountain plays McBain in a battle of unbeatens. In Division Three, Escanaba takes on Bridgeport.

All of the high schools in the western Upper Peninsula will be in the same classes next season. The breakdown was released yesterday by the Michigan High School Athletic Association. The class designations don’t really mean much, anymore – most tournaments are now split into divisions based on the number of teams participating.

College Volleyball

Michigan Tech’s Anna Jonynas has been named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Association North Division Volleyball Player of the Week. Joynas had 45 kills in the Huskies’ weekend split against Northern Michigan University.

Tech is seeded first at the GLIAC tournament this weekend at Saginaw Valley State, and Northern is seeded second.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings will host the Nashville Predators tonight. Coverage begins at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons blasted the Oklahoma City Thunder 132-108 last night. With Mason Plumlee and Wayne Ellington on the bench for a rest, Jerami Grant led a balanced attack with 21 points. Five other Pistons reached double figures.

The Pistons will visit the Denver Nuggets tonight.

NFL

Defensive back Quinton Dunbar is signing a one-year deal with the Detroit Lions. His agent confirmed the news yesterday. Dunbar comes to Detroit after a troubled year with the Seattle Seahawks. He missed off-season training while dealing with an armed robbery charge that was later dropped for lack of evidence, then played in just six games before his season ended with knee surgery.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers lost to the Minnesota Twins 15-6 yesterday. José Ureña took the loss, giving up six runs over three innings. Relievers Buck Farmer, Derek Holland and Bryan Garcia didn’t fare any better. Infielder Harold Castro pitched the ninth, and set down the Twins in order. The lone bright spot for Detroit was a grand slam off the bat of rookie Akil Baddoo. He’s the first Tiger to hit one within his first two games, and just the third Tiger to homer in each of his first two games. Baddoo also stole his first base.

The Tigers host the Twins again this afternoon. Casey Mize will pitch against J.A. Happ. Coverage begins at 12:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers fell to the Chicago Cubs 5-3 yesterday. Brett Anderson allowed four runs over five innings and took the loss. He served up three home runs. Omar Narváez homered for the Crew.

The Brewers visit the Chicago Cubs again tonight. Freddy Peralta will start against Adbert Alzolay.
