High School
In high school hockey…
– Calumet fell to Detroit-Jesuit 6-1 Friday night. Those teams play again today. The JV game will begin at 2:15, and the varsity will start at 5:00. – At the Sault Lions Showcase Friday night, Hancock fell 5-3 to Birmingham Brother Rice, the top-ranked team in Division Two. Matt Sanregret scored twice, and Teddy Randell added a goal, as the Bulldogs outshot the Warriors 37-36. Hancock will face Plymouth this afternoon.
– The score of L’Anse’s game against Sparta at the Merrill tournament was not reported. Merrill defeated Medford in the other Friday game. The semi-finals and finals will be played today.
In girls’ high school basketball Friday night…
– Calumet remained unbeaten, with a 43-32 victory over Baraga.
– Hancock slipped past Jeffers 48-46 in overtime.
– Houghton edged Westwood 47-44. Link to video highlights of the game here.
– L’Anse got past Lake Linden-Hubbell 40-38.
– Dollar Bay shut down Republic-Michigamme 38-9.
– Ontonagon defeated Ewen-Trout Creek 44-25.
On the boys’ schedule Friday night…
– L’Anse fell to Negaunee 61-34.
– Ewen-Trout Creek downed Watersmeet 60-30.
MTU Hockey Wins
The Tech hockey team found its winning form Friday night, as the 11th-ranked Huskies defeated seventh-ranked Bowling Green 4-3. The Falcons took an early two-goal lead, but Tech battled back. Brent Baltus tied the game eight minutes into the third period, and Tanner Kero’s goal about two minutes later was the game winner. Those teams play again tonight. Face-off is at 7:30 at MacInnes Arena. See video highlights from Friday’s game here.
Both Tech basketball teams host Grand Valley State today. The women’s game starts at noon, and the men’s game at 2:00 at the SDC.
NMU Hockey Falls at Huntsville
The Northern Michigan University hockey team lost 2-1 at Alabama-Huntsville Friday night. Those teams face each other again this evening.
Both Wildcats basketball teams will host Ferris State this afternoon.
Finlandia
The Finlandia men’s hockey team gave up two goals in the third period, and fell to Northland College 3-1 Friday night, Andrew Martin had tied the game with a short-handed goal for the Lions in the second period. The Lions will host Northland tomorrow afternoon at 4:00.
The Finlandia women’s team took an early lead on Lindsay Jackman’s first period goal, but St. Norbert College scored single goals in the second and third periods, and the Lions fell 2-1. The Green Knights outshot the Lions 38-14. Those teams play again this afternoon at 3:00 at the Houghton County Arena.
GLHL – Pioneers Win
In Great Lakes Hockey League play, the Portage Lake Pioneers overcame an early deficit, and defeated the Fox Cities Ice Dogs 7-3 Friday night. The Calumet Wolverines will entertain the Ice Dogs tonight at 7:30 at the Colosseum. As part of Hockey Weekend in Calumet, all kids wearing Calumet Ice Kings or Junior Kings Jerseys will get in free.
NHL – Red Wings Host Predators
The Detroit Red Wings host the Predators tonight. Face-off is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
NBA – Pistons Edge Pacers
Andre Drummond’s tip-in of a missed Brandon Jennings layup with three-tenths of a second remaining lifted the Detroit Pistons to a 98-96 win over the Pacers Friday night. Jennings led the team with 37 points, including eight-three-pointers. Drummond finished with 16 points and 16 rebounds. The Pistons have won nine of their last 11 games, and host the 76ers tonight.
NFL
The NFL Conference Championship games will be played tomorrow… the Packers at Seattle at 3:05, and the Colts at New England at 6:40. Hear both of Sunday’s games, and the Super Bowl, on the voice of the NFL playoffs, AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
MLB – Tigers, Price Agree
Pitcher David Price will earn nearly 20-million dollars pitching for the Detroit Tigers this season. The 19.75-million dollar deal reached on Friday avoids arbitration, and makes Price the highest-paid player ever in an arbitration-eligible season. The Tigers also reached one-year agreements with pitcher Alfredo Simon ($5.55 million) and outfielder J.D. Martinez ($3 million) to avoid arbitration hearings. Pitcher Al Alburquerque is the only arbitration-eligible player who remains unsigned.
