Runoff briefly challenges L’Anse sewage system

A small leak at the L’Anse sewage treatment plant was resolved recently before any harm could be done. At last night’s council meeting, Village Manager Bob LaFave said the spill on March 13th came from a small crack in one of the plant’s clarifiers.

We’ve contacted the health department and the state. There’s no threat to human health. It didn’t get into the watershed and everyone did exactly what they were supposed to do.

LaFave said the tank in question isn’t usually in use.

With all the runoff coming at once, we had a surge hit our system. We took it, but it made it a little more fun than I think everyone wanted to have that day.

LaFave noted that such surges can happen in the spring because some residents have sump pumps that drain into the sewer system. Sump pumps that handle groundwater should be set up to drain elsewhere.
