The Sulo & Aileen Maki Library is pleased to announce the reception of a grant from the Finlandia Foundation to support the expansion of the library’s Finnish studies collection.
A majority of the new materials will be on display in the Maki Library in February during regular scheduled hours.
The collection includes a variety of modern and classical literature, poetry and Kalevala-related works, along with academic materials complementary to Finlandia’s programs in Criminal Justice, Sociology, Finnish and Religious studies, and Business. Highlights of the collection include modern Scandinavian crime fiction novels by Jarkko Sipilä, a lavishly-illustrated book on Finnish haute cuisine, and ethnographic recordings on CD and DVD. Explorations of modern Finnish culture, including the welfare state, education, and business practices are also represented in this collection.
According to head librarian Rebecca R. Daly, “This grant helps fulfill Finlandia’s commitment to our institutional heritage. With the generous support of the Finlandia Foundation, the library has been able to update our holdings in Finnish Studies, procuring recently-published Finnish literature in English that is often hard to find in North America. This collection will benefit both academic pursuits and leisure reading for the broader community.”
The community is welcome to peruse the collection and become acquainted with the Maki Library’s extensive resources. Members of the public are eligible to join the Maki Library as community patrons and can then check out library materials, which also includes DVDs and audiobooks.
The Sulo & Aileen Maki Library is located on the campus of Finlandia University at 535 Franklin St, Hancock. The library is open from 8 am until midnight Monday through Thursday, Friday 8 am to 5 pm, Saturday 1 pm to 5 pm, and Sundays from 2 pm until midnight.
