College Basketball
The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team won its eighth Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament title yesterday, holding off Ashland 74-63. The Huskies led by 15 at halftime. Jordan Ludescher paced Tech with 22 points and eight rebounds. Ellie Mackay added 19 points. Mackay was named the tournament’s most valuable player, and she and Ludescher were placed on the all-tournament team. The Huskies’ 18th-straight win tied a school record.
The Huskies men’s team fell to Ashland 85-77 in the GLIAC title match last evening. Owen White scored 33 points. He and Eric Carl were named to the all-tournament team.
Both Tech teams will advance to the NCAA Division II tournament. The women are seeded first in the Midwest Regional. They’ll have an opening-round bye, and face either Grand Valley or Ashland Saturday in Springfield, Missouri.
The men’s team earned a second seed in the Midwest Regional. They also get a first-round bye, and will play either Southern Indiana or Lewis Saturday in Evansville, Indiana.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings return to the ice tomorrow, when they host the Tampa Bay Lightning. Coverage begins at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
NBA
Because of the all-star break, the Detroit Pistons won’t play again until they visit the Charlotte Hornets Thursday.
Former Piston Blake Griffin has reportedly reached a deal to join the Brooklyn Nets.
MLB
The Detroit Tigers defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 5-1 yesterday in Grapefruit League play. José Ureña gave up the Jays’ only run before leaving in the second inning. Casey Mize threw two scoreless frames, but walked three batters.
The Tigers have today off.
Detroit catcher Grayson Greiner left yesterday’s game in the sixth inning after he was hit in the face by a pitch. He’ll be evaluated today.
In Cactus League action, the Milwaukee Brewers had yesterday off. They’ll face the Los Angeles Angels this afternoon.
