CC ISD tech students excel in auto competition

Zander Worm of Calumet paced area technical students enrolled in the Automotive Technology program participating in the SkillsUSA Competition last month. Normally, six districts converge on Bay College in Escanaba to vie across many disciplines that make up technical education in the Upper Peninsula. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, this year’s contest was done locally. Since not every school had proper equipment on site, only three ISDs took part.

For auto tech, there are two different examinations. Both contain a written portion in addition to a hands-on section. Vehicle inspection mimics a job you might have at a dealership or an auto shop. It involves grading a vehicle’s overall health and recommending actions needed to make it ready for sale. The maintenance and light repair overall category is a comprehensive test featuring exercises involving six main vehicle systems. Instructor David Narhi lists some of what Worm had to tackle.

So this year was engine repair, engine performance, brakes, steering suspension, and drivetrain.

Worm placed first overall for the second straight year in the overall category. He will go on to compete at the state level, also expected to be held virtually. No final details have been set yet.

Other results include Virgil Mongozid, from Baraga High School, who placed first locally and third regionally in the Vehicle Inspection category. Connor Berg and Jesse Pelli of Calumet finished second and third respectively at the local level.
