Area road commissions are implementing weight restrictions for tractor trailers beginning Tuesday morning. The load caps help take stress off roads that are already dealing with pressures related to snow melt and the thaw and refreeze cycle that comes with temperatures rising above 32 degrees during the day before falling back at night.
Weight is capped at 65% of normal limits. For a delivery truck with one steering axle and one rear axle that equates to 23,400 pounds. A tractor trailer with one rear axle and one trailer axle can carry a maximum of 35,100 pounds. The full table is below.
The road commissions promise strict enforcement even though there will be no road signs posted within Keweenaw, Houghton, or Baraga counties.
