Tech Hockey Swept at Bowling Green – Sunday Sports Wrap

College Hockey

The eighth-ranked Bowling Green State University hockey team completed a weekend sweep of 18th-ranked Michigan Tech with a 5-2 victory Saturday night. Tristan Ashbrook gave the Huskies an early lead, and Alec Broetzman’s goal late in the opening period gave Tech a 2-1 lead at the first intermission. The Falcons then scored four straight to put the game away. Blake Pietila made 35 saves, as the Huskies were outshot 40-17.

The Northern Michigan University hockey team closed out a sweep of Ferris State University with a 5-3 victory last night. Five different players scored for the Wildcats.

College Basketball

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team won its sixth straight game Saturday, outpointing Ferris State 63-55. It looked as if the Huskies had taken control early, as they broke out to a 13 point lead at the end of the first quarter. The Bulldogs came back, though and closed the gap to three points at halftime. The contest remained tight until the closing moments. Ellie Mackay led Tech with 31 points.

The Tech men’s team suffered its second narrow loss of the weekend, falling to Ferris 56-54 Saturday. Dawson Bilski’s three-pointer with just over a minute remaining was the final score of the game, as the teams traded misses down the stretch. His desperation shot in the closing seconds was blocked. Trent Bell led the Huskies with 17 points.

The Northern Michigan women’s basketball team never trailed, as they shut down Lake Superior State University 62-46 Saturday. Makaylee Kuhn scored 18 points for the Wildcats. Those teams play again this afternoon at the Soo.

The Northern men’s team lost to LSSU 70-60. Max Bjorklund paced the Wildcats with 15 points. Those teams tip off again this afternoon in Marquette.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings lost their fifth straight game Saturday night, falling 3-2 to the Florida Panthers in overtime. All the regulation scoring came in the first period, with Anthony Mantha and Tyler Bertuzzi scoring Detroit’s goals. Aleksi Heponiemi’s first NHL goal won it for Florida in overtime. Thomas Griess made 23 saves in the loss.

The Wings host the Panthers again this afternoon. Coverage begins at 4:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons couldn’t overcome a slow start, and fell to the Golden State Warriors 118-91 Saturday night. Jerami Grant lad Detroit with 18 points.

The Pistons continue their western trip tomorrow, when they visit the Denver Nuggets. Coverage will start at 8:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL

Is Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford headed to the Los Angeles Rams? There are multiple report saying the Lions have agreed to trade their all-time passing leader to L-A. In exchange, they would get Rams quarterback Jared Goff, along with L-A’s third-round draft pick this year, and their first-round picks in 2022 and 2023.

Goff was the Rams’ first-round draft pick in 2016. He led L-A to the Super Bowl three seasons later, but recent struggles caused management to lose faith in him. Detroit picks up his four-year, $134 million contract.

New Lions general manager Brad Holmes was instrumental in drafting Goff when he was the Rams’ director of college scouting.

The deal cannot officially be completed until mid-March, because of NFL rules.

There are also reports that Detroit will hire Kelvin Sheppard as the team’s new linebackers coach. Sheppard ended his eight-year NFL career with Detroit in 2018. He spent the last year as director of player development for his alma mater, Louisiana State University.
