Houghton Planning Commission preview

Tuesday’s Planning Commission meeting will have two major orders of business. Dating back to 2008, a 20-acre parcel of land was annexed by the City of Houghton near Cole Creek. At the time, it had just one structure on it. That remains the case today, but City Manager Eric Waara says development is likely on at least a portion of the parcel.

You could still do single family, but you could also do townhouses or something like that or, potentially, business uses. I think they’re looking at making that property more marketable.

The City Council put the brakes on discussions regarding the big parking deck for 60 days earlier this month. While it handles other business, the council has tasked the Planning Commission with sifting through alternative options now that Veridea Group has backed out. Tonight, Waara hopes that the committee can develop a framework to carry out that responsibility.

That plan isn’t exactly what to do with the deck, the plan is how to get that input, to get that information needed for the council to make the decisions going forward.

Tuesday’s meeting begins at 5:30.
