Copper Country ISD secures mental health funding

The Copper Country Intermediate School District will be meeting with local mental health organizations this week as it works to implement a recent grant it received. It was one of just three ISDs in the entire state to get the Project Aware Grant in 2021. Two-million dollars over five years, it is a major project made possible through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, part of the US Department of Health and Human Services.

Mental Health Services Coordinator Natalie Morgan says a majority of last week’s Board of Education meeting was focused on the grant and how many new hires would be needed to fulfill its requirements. The thrust of the job will be implementing mental health first aid programs for all member districts across Houghton, Keweenaw, and Baraga Counties. Morgan says how the new hires will be allocated between schools is something that is still being worked on.

Planning is already underway to ensure that mental health first aid remains in the forefront for the ISD after federal funding ends.

The mental health services specialists, they will throughout this five years obtain a Masters Degree in social work. The plan is to absorb this team into the ISD and be able to continue to provide services.

The district will be meeting with Copper Country Mental Health Services in the coming days to help create a liaison within the organization.
