Calumet High School Volleyball Tourney Run Resumes Today – Tuesday Sports Wrap

High School Volleyball

The Calumet High School volleyball team continues the long-delayed state tournament tonight. After a break forced by COVID-19 restrictions, the Copper Kings will face Beaverton in the quarterfinals this evening at Houghton Lake High School.

If Calumet wins this evening, they’ll advance to the semifinals Thursday at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek, where they would meet the winner of tonight’s contest between Bronson and Monroe Saint Mary Catholic Central.

College Hockey

The Finlandia University women’s hockey team will not take to the ice this season. The Lions have decided to opt out of this year’s campaign because of COVID-19 concerns. The men’s hockey team still hopes to play.

College Football

The University of Alabama thumped Ohio State University 52-24 last night, to win the college football championship game. It’s the 18th national title for the Crimson Tide, and the sixth under coach Nick Saban.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings have waived eight players, as they prepare to finalize their 23-man roster for the upcoming season.

The cuts include former first-round pick Evgeny Svechnikov, Brian Lashoff, Dominic Turgeon, Turner Elson, Dylan McIlrath, Joe Hicketts, Kevin Boyle, and Calvin Rickard, who started in goal when the Wings defeated the Saint Louis Blues in the 2019 Hockeyville USA game at the Calumet Colosseum.

If they are not claimed by other teams, the players could be assigned to the Wings’ taxi squad, or to the Grand Rapids Griffins.

The Red Wings begin their NHL season Thursday evening at home against the Carolina Hurricanes. Coverage begins at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons host the Milwaukee Bucks tomorrow night. Coverage begins at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL

There are reports that the Green Bay Packers are preparing to sign offensive tackle Jared Veldheer. If Veldheer takes the field for Green Bay this weekend, he would become the first man to play for two different NFL teams in the same post-season. He played for Indianapolis last weekend, after having been moved up from the Colts’ practice squad. He also automatically moved back down to the practice squad after the game. Under this season’s COVID-19 rules, that gives other teams a chance to sign him. Veldheer played for the Packers last season.
