Iconic Houghton Miner Statue Damaged

You may have noticed that Downtown Houghton’s official greeter is missing in action.

The Miner statue at Franklin Square that welcomes folks into the city’s downtown was hit by a car late Sunday night.

The driver of the car wasn’t injured, but city officials say the miner was severely damaged. He’s been hospitalized at the Department of Public Works shop for repairs.

The miner sculpture honors the spirit that gave birth to Houghton and our region, and the hard-working people who powered the Copper Boom. He’s been watching over the intersection of Shelden and Montezuma Avenues since 1980.

City officials promise that he’ll be back on the job following surgery and rehabilitation.
