Man Dies in Houghton County Snowmobile Crash

UPDATE: The crash victim has been identified as Jeffrey Scott Schaller of Imlay City, Michigan. The crash took place on Trail Three north of Elevenmile Lake, southwest of Painesdale.

A 61-year-old man died in a snowmobile crash Saturday afternoon in Adams Township.

Houghton County Sheriff’s deputies say the man apparently lost control of his sled around 4:15. He was thrown from the vehicle, and hit several trees. EMS personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.

No information about the victim has been released, except that he was from downstate.

Deputies indicated that excessive speed is believed to have been a factor. Their investigation continues.

Deputies also thanked several snowmobilers who helped bring medical personnel and investigators to and from the scene, and who allowed the sheriff’s department to use their machines.

Adam’s Township first responders, Mercy Ambulance and Superior Service assisted at the scene.
