COVID Infections Rise in Houghton County Nursing Homes

The COVID-19 outbreak at the Mission Point of Hancock nursing home continues to grow, and another outbreak is developing at Canal View.

The latest weekly report filed with the State of Michigan by Mission Point includes 39 new resident cases. That raises the pandemic total to 52 at the facility. One resident death was reported last week. 17 additional positives were reported among staff members, raising the pandemic total to 37.

Canal View reported 16 new COVID-19 cases among residents last week. The facility had experienced only one previously. Six staff members were diagnosed last week with the coronavirus, bringing the pandemic total to 17.

Gardenview in Calumet and GreenTree of Hubbell continue to report no COVID-19 diagnoses among residents since the pandemic began. PortagePointe recorded no new diagnoses last week, and has had five during the pandemic. PortagePointe and GreenTree each reported one staff member testing positive last week.

COVID-19 diagnoses in Michigan remain alarmingly high, but continue to trend downward. Yesterday, 4,730 new cases were reported. In late November, we had several days in which more than 8,000 diagnoses were confirmed. All but seven of Michigan’s counties are trending downward.
