MTU

The Michigan Tech hockey team roared back from its lopsided loss to Bemidji State University Saturday, and blanked the Beavers yesterday 3-0. Blake Pietila stopped 31 shots, and earned his first career shutout. Justin Misiak, Trenton Bliss, and Jake Crespi scored for Tech.

The Huskies will face Northern Michigan University in a home-and-home series Friday and Saturday.

NBA

Sekou Doumbouya scored 23 points, as the Detroit Pistons defeated the New York Knicks 99-91 in a preseason NBA game last night. The second-year player and Detroit’s four rookies saw plenty of playing time

The Pistons will visit the Washington Wizards for exhibitions Thursday and Saturday, before opening the regular season December 23rd. Listen for select Detroit games on 99.3 The Lift.

There are reports that Detroit has waived LiAngelo Ball, the brother of Lonzo and LaMelo Ball. Ball was recently signed to a one-year, non-guaranteed contract. He may yet wind up with the Pistons’ G League team, the Grand Rapids Drive.

MLB

The Cleveland Indians are planning to change their team name. Multiple reports say the official announcement that the “Indians” moniker will be dropped could come this week. There’s no word as to what the process of picking a new name will involve. The team could continue to use the “Indians” identity through the upcoming season.

Cleveland has been known as the Indians since 1915. The club had several nicknames before that, including the Blues, the Bronchos, and the Naps – in honor of early stay Napoleon Lajoie.

NFL

Aaron Rodgers threw three touchdown passes and ran for another, as the Green Bay Packers defeated the Detroit Lions 31-24 yesterday. Davante Adams caught a touchdown pass in his eighth straight game, breaking the team record Don Hutson set in the 1940s.

The win, combined with the Vikings’ loss to the Buccaneers, clinched the NFC North Division title for Green Bay.

Detroit quarterback Matthew Stafford threw one touchdown pass. He left the contest in the fourth quarter, after suffering a rib injury. Stafford was x-rayed after the game, and interim head coach Darrell Bevell said it was too early to tell if he will be able to play next week.

In last night’s contest, the Bills shut down the Steelers 26-15.

Tonight, the Browns entertain the Ravens. Coverage begins at 7:30 on 99.3 The Lift.
