The public could get its first look at Houghton’s proposed Lakeshore Drive Redevelopment Project on December 15th.
The Houghton city council, planning commission and downtown development authority have scheduled a joint meeting.
The actual purpose of the session is to fulfill a requirement set by a program that maintains the city’s readiness to apply for redevelopment grants.
But, at Wednesday’s meeting, City Manager Eric Waara told city council members that the Veridea Group is ready to present a preliminary proposal for redevelopment of the city’s Lakeshore Drive area. Veridea was chosen as the city’s development partner in the fall of 2019…
Planning has been done in conjunction with a committee made up of city officials and downtown stakeholders. The goal is to develop a project that would replace the aging large downtown parking deck, and create potential retail, office, residential or hotel space that would face the waterfront.
The public will be able to attend the December 15th meeting electronically, beginning at 5:30. Log-in instructions will be posted on the city’s website.
In other news from Wednesday’s meeting, the city has some rental space available at the City Center.
Midwest Loan Services, which has been leasing the upper floors of the building, has outgrown the space.
The city had, at one point, considered selling the entire building to Midwest Loan, and relocating city offices. Instead, Midwest is relocating to the former D and N Building in Hancock.
The Houghton Housing Commission will assume ownership of all of the residential properties currently owned by the city of Houghton. Council members approved the transfer because it will enable the Housing Commission to be eligible for more grant money.
And, the city has a new law enforcement vehicle.
