COVID Spike Forces WUPHD Notification Cutback

More than 750 COVID-19 cases have been diagnosed within the Western Upper Peninsula Health Department region in the past three weeks, and the sudden increase has overwhelmed the staff.

To cope with the overload, contact tracing is being scaled back.

Priority will be placed on notifying people at highest risk…
• Those age 65 and older, especially with additional health issues.
• Children age 18 and younger, especially those who attend school in-person.
• Residents of congregate living environments, such as long-term care facilities.

Others who may have been exposed may or may not be contacted, as staffing limitations permit.

If you learn you have been exposed, it will be up to you to take action to protect those around you.

If you test positive, or are told you are a probable positive, you should…
• Isolate for 10 days. After 10 days, if your symptoms have improved and you are fever-free without the use of medication, you may return to normal activities.
• Stay away from other members of your household, to avoid infecting them.
• Notify your employer or school.
• Notify those with whom you have been in close contact, and ask them to quarantine for 14 days.

If you learn that you are a close contact, you should…
• Quarantine for 14 days. If you develop symptoms, you should get a test, and stay away from family members.
• Notify your employer that you are a close contact, and need to quarantine.
• If you are an essential worker, discuss return-to-work options with your employer.
