Whitmer Calls on Legislature to Endorse Mask Requirement

Governor Gretchen Whitmer yesterday said it’s no coincidence that the dramatic statewide increase in COVID-19 diagnoses began just after the Michigan Supreme Court struck down the 1945 law that she had used to issue emergency orders…

“As you can see, our cases per million since then have been on the rise – dramatically so.”

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services quickly reinstituted many of her orders, including the masking requirement…

“Wearing the mask is the law in Michigan.”

Still, she called on the legislature to go on the record endorsing the practice…

“Something this important, this critical to saving lives, deserves the legislature’s stamp of approval.”

The Republican-led legislature seems unlikely to do that. Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey is on record opposing it.
