State Salutes Election Workers

Polls remain open until 8:00 this evening, as the 2020 general election continues.

For those who organize and run elections, this has been the most challenging in decades. With COVID-19 concerns, and expanded early voting, local clerks and election workers have had to adapt to some big changes. To acknowledge their effort, Governor Gretchen Whitmer has proclaimed today as Election Hero Day in Michigan.

In a recent interview on KBear 102’s Morning Coffee program, Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson also saluted election staffers…

“The highly ethical public servants who live in our communities work tirelessly to ensure our elections are fair and accurate are the unsung heroes of our democracy, so thank your local election worker today, if you haven’t already.”

Across the state, 30,000 people serve as election workers.

In her proclamation, Whitmer also encouraged voters to protect our election workers by wearing masks, and observing COVID-19 safety precautions.

Benson anticipates final results will be tallied by the end of the week…

“We’re estimating Friday, based on just basic math, and how long it takes to count 3 million ballots, absentee, and our current infrastructure, but it may be sooner than that.”

Preliminary results for local elections should be available late this evening. Listen for our coverage on 97.7 The Wolf, beginning after the polls close.
