In local high school football playoff action Saturday…
• In Division Five, Hancock’s season ended with a 33-14 loss at Gladwin. Austin Salani returned a kickoff 94 yards for a score for the Bulldogs, but Flying Gs’ quarterback Nick Wheeler ran for 206 yards and a touchdown, and passed for two more scores.
• In Division Six, Calumet advanced with a 38-16 victory over Houghton. The Copper Kings’ next game will be at Menominee. Listen to the broadcast on KBear 102.3. The Maroons had an opening-round bye.
• In Division Seven, L’Anse lost 65-7 at Traverse City Saint Francis.
• In Eight-Player Division Two, Lake Linden-Hubbell trounced Forest Park 48-8. Brandon Lavigne scored on touchdown runs of 43, 69, 11 and 57 yards. Caleb Klein added scoring jaunts of 68 and 31 yards. Luke Marcotte closed the scoring with a late six-yard run. The Trojans’ touchdown came late in the fourth quarter, on a 15-yard pass from Gabe Scarlassara to Tommy Showers. The Lakes face a rematch against North Central. Hear the broadcast on 97.7 The Wolf. The Jets advanced with a 74-6 victory over Engadine yesterday.

The high school volleyball tournament opens tonight…
• In Division Three, L’Anse entertains West Iron County
• In Division Four District 98, the quarterfinal match between Chassell and Baraga has been canceled because Baraga has begun a two-week COVID-19 hiatus. The entire District 97 tournament has been wiped out because of the COVID-19 hiatus in Ontonagon and Gogebic Counties.

NFL

The Lions gave up three touchdowns in the second quarter, and suffered an ugly 41-21 to the Colts yesterday. Matthew Stafford passed for all three Detroit scores. The Lions’ offense produced just 29 yards rushing. 

Detroit receiver Kenny Golladay left the game late in the first half with a hip injury. He’ll be evaluated today.

The Vikings took control with two third-quarter touchdowns, and defeated the Packers 28-22 yesterday. Minnesota’s Dalvin Cook rushed for 163 yards and three scores. Aaron Rodgers threw three TD passes.

In last night’s contest, the Eagles shut down the Cowboys 23-9.
