New Halloween Activities Replace Those Canceled By COVID

While many of the Copper Country’s traditional Halloween activities have been shut down by the COVID-19 pandemic, new options are still offering some seasonal fun.

The annual “Haunted Mine” event at the Quincy Mine has been turned into a drive-through event. Students and staff from the MTU Department of Visual and Performing Arts have set up a route through the grounds of the historic site. Participants drive the route, while listening to a soundtrack on their car radios. The “Haunted Drive-Thru at the Mine” debuted last evening, and will be repeated tonight and tomorrow night between 7:00 and 10:00. Money raised will support the Quincy Mine Hoist Association.

Main Street Calumet is hosting a Halloween SCARE-venger hunt this afternoon between 2:00 and 6:00. Spooky and fun displays will be set up outdoors throughout downtown Calumet to encourage families to come out together. Participants will complete a SCARE-venger Hunt Bingo Card by finding things on a Halloween-themed list. All of the items can be located by walking on 5th and 6th Streets. Completed cards can be turned in at the Main Street Calumet booth in the greenspace south of the Calumet Theatre in exchange for a bag of candy. SCARE-venger Hunt Cards are available at many downtown businesses, or can be downloaded from MainstreetCalumet.com.

The first “Spooky Halloween at the Theatre” event will take place tonight between 6:00 and 9:00 at the Calumet Theatre. Families can enjoy food, free treats, games and a costume contest for the kids with prizes. The animated thriller Monster House will be shown on the big screen. Costumes are encouraged, and organizers promise that COVID-19 mask and social distancing protocols will be observed. Tickets are $1.00 per person, and are limited. Call the box office this afternoon at 337-2610 to lock yours in. Remaining tickets will be sold at the door on a first-come, first-served basis.

Today is the final day to enter the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce’s Fall Scarecrow Contest. Houghton and Keweenaw County residents are invited to create scarecrows, and display them in front of their homes or businesses. Submit a photo to the Keweenaw Chamber Facebook page. There are cash prizes. Judging will take place this afternoon at 5:00, and the winner will be announced tomorrow.

Aspirus is holding a drive-through trick-or-treating event tomorrow morning in front of its Laurium Clinic. Costumed employees will hand out free goodie bags from 10:00 until noon to the first 100 families. Participants should enter the parking lot from Osceola Street, and will be directed to the clinic canopy entrance. Stay in your vehicle and wear a face mask when interacting with Aspirus staff. Costumes are encouraged.
