18 Non-Profits to Benefit from PHF Giving Tuesday Match

18 local non-profits will take advantage of matching funds from the Portage Health Foundation in this year’s Giving Tuesday program.

This year’s non-profits are the Swedetown Trails Club, Superior Search and Rescue, Simple Kindness for Youth, the Ontonagon County Cancer Association, Omega House, Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly, Keweenaw Random Acts of Community Kindness, Keweenaw Family Resource Center, the Friends of Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, Dial Help, the Dan Schmitt Gift of Music and Outdoor Education Fund, the Copper Harbor Trails Club, Copper Country Senior Meals, Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Baraga County Shelter Home, the Ahmeek Village Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, 31 Backpacks, and the Barbara Kettle Gundlach Shelter…

“We’ve been included every year since it started, and we appreciate it so much. I love the promotion of it and the reason behind it, and, of course, the Portage Health Foundation has been so helpful to us.”

That’s shelter director Mary Niemela, who tells us that money raised will go directly to help victims of domestic violence.

Giving Tuesday will take place on December 1st, immediately following the notorious retail events on Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday. It’s designed to reinforce the traditional holiday value of sharing.

This year, the Portage Health Foundation will match donations made to those 18 non-profits on Giving Tuesday, to a maximum of $200,000.

Over the past three years, the Giving Tuesday event has raised nearly $700,000, with $288,000 coming from the Foundation.
