The number of people working in the Upper Peninsula fell in November, but employment totals remain higher than they were a year ago. The State of Michigan reports that 136,700 people had jobs in the 11th month of 2014. That’s 1,200 fewer than in October, but 5,700 more than in November of 2013. The seasonally unadjusted unemployment rate fell to 6.1 percent, compared to 8.7 percent a year earlier. The statewide unadjusted unemployment rate was 5.7 percent. Across the state, seasonal jobs in the tourism and construction industry fell, but jobs in the trades, manufacturing, professional services, and the health and education fields made up most of that loss. Every area in the state better higher employment figures compared to November of 2013.
Keweenaw County registered the highest unadjusted unemployment rate in the state, at 10.8 percent. Ontonagon County’s rate was 9.2 percent. Baraga County was at 7.9 percent, and Houghton County’s rate was 5.3 percent.
